Termite Swarm Season in Clearwater
Termite swarm season in Clearwater usually begins in February and stretches through the humid summer months. During this time, specialized termites grow wings and leave their nests to start new colonies.
If you see clouds of small insects near your porch lights or find piles of discarded wings on your windowsills, it is a sign that a colony is nearby and likely active in or around your home structure.
Living here in Pinellas County, we all deal with the humidity and the heat. These are the exact conditions that make termite season in Florida so intense. Since 2011, ProHealth Pest Control has helped neighbors identify these pests before they eat through the equity in their homes.
We are a small, local team based right here in Clearwater. We do not use a script or a corporate handbook. We just know Florida homes.
When Do Termites Swarm in Florida?
The timing depends on the specific termite species living on your property. Our warm, wet climate means we have a few different “windows” of activity to watch out for.
- Eastern Subterranean Termites: These are the early birds. They usually swarm from February to April. You will often see them during the day, specifically after a heavy spring rain when the sun comes out.
- Formosan Termites: These are aggressive and fast. Their termite swarming season peaks in May and June. They prefer the evening and are highly attracted to your outdoor lights.
- Asian Subterranean Termites: These are becoming more common in the Tampa Bay area. They thrive in the warm, humid evenings of late spring.
- Drywood Termites: Unlike the others, these do not need soil. They swarm in smaller groups, usually during the late spring and summer.
Termite Swarmers vs Flying Ants
Many people call us, thinking they have flying ants, only to find out it is something much worse. It is easy to get them confused. Both are small, dark, and have wings. However, there are three things you can check right now.
First, look at the waist. Ants have a pinched, narrow waist. Termites have a thick, straight body. Second, check the antennae. Termites have straight, beaded antennae, while ants have bent or “elbowed” ones.
Finally, look at the wings. Flying termites that Florida residents see will have four wings that are all the exact same length. An ant has two long wings and two short wings.

Spotting the Warning Signs
You might not see the bugs themselves. Often, you only find what they leave behind. One of the most common signs of termite activity is finding forgotten wings on a windowsill or stuck in a spiderweb near a door.
Once these “swarmers” find a mate, they snap their wings off. They do not need them to crawl into your walls and start a new termite colony.
If you see subterranean termites swarm inside your house, do not wait. This usually means they emerged from a gap in your drywall or baseboards. This is a major red flag that the structure is already under attack.
How We Protect Your Florida Home
We believe in being thorough. Every visit includes our “Best Service Guarantee.” We use universal documentation, which means we record every finding so you have a clear paper trail of your home’s health.
We also handle other local problems with the same care. For example, if you have a rodent issue, we seal entry points with high-quality spray foam.
We never use steel wool because it rusts in our salty Clearwater air. If you are dealing with bed bugs, we use heat treatment.
We find it is much more effective than using a long list of chemicals.
FAQs
It means a mature colony is very close. If the swarm is inside, they are likely already in the wood. If it is outside, they are scouting your home as a potential new nest.
It starts as early as February for subterranean types and goes through June for Formosan and Drywood types.
You can kill the bugs you see, but the colony is hidden. Killing the swarmers does nothing to stop the thousands of workers eating the wood inside your walls.
We look for mud tubes on the foundation, wood that sounds hollow, and moisture traps that attract pests. We check the spots most people miss.
